One of the series of droll pictorial hooked rugs produced by the husband and wife Mercedes and James Hutchinson of New York. She designed them and they had them hooked by others to sell through auction in NYC in the 1940s. Most contain the same caricatures of husband and wife with a wry commentary on love, family relationships, men and women. This one is unusual with its pictorial and its vertical orientation. (detail images do not show actual colors, it looks washed ou, we'll rephoto)
See the description of our two other Hutchinson rugs for more info on the couple. Severa; examples of their work appear in Folk Art Underfoot by Kate and Joel Kopp. These are few and far between. I have always wanted to a a catalogue raisonee of all the phrases that they incorporated in their rugs to see if they make a complete short story, but it is unknown where others may be.
