Potholder is a distinctive construction technique in which the individual squares are each backed and completed, then all are joined together to construct the complete quilt. In traditional quilt construction the top is pieced completely first, then the batting and backing get added in sequence and the layers quited together. "Potholder' is also called 'quilt as you go' technique. This type of quilt is so uncommon, it was the subject of an article and soon a book. They are mostly New England in origin. This rare  example is also outsized and contains several shades of red in great small scale prints, giving an overall  rosy tone rather than a dark red. Also, the arragement of Log Cabin pieced elements in triangles that point up or is one I have not seen before. And, the narrow red binding around each block adds yet another distinctive element.
