MENNONITE BEAR'S PAW ON POINT ANTIQUE QUILT

MENNONITE BEAR'S PAW ON POINT ANTIQUE QUILT

A striking and unusual composition from a Pennsylvania Mennonite community. The smaller scale of the tiny Bear's Paw elements, the sashing and the placement of the blocks on point create secondary and tertiary patterns, making this an optical illusion. It is a distinctive composition that I have not seen done before, although this colorways is traditional for the region and the era, and appears in repeat examples of classic patterns. Red, cheddar and green in mint untouched condition suggest this quilt was not used, certainly it has been well preserved with respect for its artistry.
