CHIPS AND WHETSTONES ANTIQUE QUILT dated 1835
One of the earliest quilts in inventory and quite special in several aspects. The rarely seen earliest 19th century earth tone prints are arrayed in a difficult- to- piece CHIPS AND WHETSTONES pattern (some might also consider it a COMPASS) To further the dynamic aspects of their visual, the circular motifs are in blocks set on point. And it has a textural aspect also in the trapunto quilting that enlivens the white areas alternating with the sixteen pieced blocks. There is a note attached as to its history that it was given as a gift to another descendant of the maker signed Christmas 1945. From storage it has an age patina and soil that could be removed with a conservationist's cleaning that we canprovide if the buyer prefers.
