The pieced cotton at the top is a "chin guard" sewn over to protect the quilt beneath from hand oils as it is repeatedly pulled up to cover the sleeper. We'll remove it if you prefer; the blocks are intact beneath it. The 25 CRAZY blocks are pieced from menswear wool suiting in various shades of grey and navy blue. Made like a true crazy quilt, the seams are embroidered over in stitches sewn in cotton thread. Rustic and sophisticated both, the fragmented approach to the treatment of the piecing makes this so contemporary, as does the somber palette, yet its history brings it decades back, nade no doubt during the heyday of reusing clothing woolens in quilts during the first decades of the 20th centurywhen the men's clothing industry flourished in the U.S.
