METHODIST EPISCOPAL NEW JERSEY LADIES AID SOCIETY SAMPLER QUILT
| The stencilled name ABRAM HENNION is clue to the NEW JERSEY origin of this bold sampler quilt. Though some might think it was made in Maine because of the boats and the initials M.E., in fact the letters stand for Methodist Episcopal Ladies Aid Society. There is no indication as to the location of the congregation responsible for its origin, so geneology on Hennion will likely provide the answers. The M.E. Church was responsible for the creation of many fund raising quilts originating in their summer colonies in Oak Bluff MA, Ocean Grove NJ, Chataqua NY and elsewhere. Perhaps the motivation behind this one was to make a gift for the minister or to raise funds for the group through raffling it off. research is underway into the history of the types of Methodist Episcopal red quilts to learn when and how they developed, and who may have devised the design and format adopted by various congregations throughout the country. The 49 squares give the quilt a visual richness and contain a variety of pieced and applique motifs, Many of the pieced or applique blocks are motifs seen in other red and white quilts located to New Jersey in the late 19th century.
