PINE BURR VINTAGE QUILT mostly blue cottons

The most unusual Pine Burr I have seen, its rows of triangles sewn so closely spaced that the surface appears serpentine and very dimensional, unlike other variations. A southern traditional quilt construct made by folding fabric into triangle shapes to sew down in layered rows each atop the previous row.The usual version is made as a circular element that looks like a pineapple. This distinctive example has row upon row, grouped first into 5 narrow panels that were joined together to create the entire quiltMore like modern art than a quilt, this astonishing composition is truly three dimensional. The triangles were layered one row atop the preceding one until the desired quilt size was achieved. This format is seen usually in small square pillow faces or mats; that this quilter made an extra large bed cover instead is remarkable. The subtly beautiful palette results from the myriad of feedsack cottons, mostly in blues and rose, from the Depression era. The folded triangles are sewn to a sacking foundation. Heavy weight because each piece is folded completely doubling the amount of fabric included. Said to be African American, found in Texas.
