An applique figure that was most likely published in a newspaper column and sold to quilt makers throughout the country, not just the south. During that era it was a trend to depict black people in stereotypical fashion in all manner of textiles and printed material. Today of course this aspect is considered politically incorrect but it does represent a period in American history before the awareness gained during the civil rights movement.
