The little element of a triangle at the corner of each pieced block creates an optical illusion of the overall design in which the white areas between the pieced blocks read like large dots even though they are not curved! Great fun to see one pattern familiar as a small square block trasnform into something different once all the blocks have been pieced together. I love indigo quilts when the piecing is small and tricky like this example. because there are still many quilts available in this palette, The blue was colorfast, and the color symbolic of the anti-drinking movement of the era.
