AFRICAN AMERICAN WORLD GEOGRAPHY ANTIQUE QUILT

Made by two African American sisters surname LOMAX, According to family lore, they were school teachers who created the pictorial blocks based on pictures they savored in the National Geographic Magazine.. They never traveled overseas nor far from their Kentucky home, but were so affected by what they learned that they chose to depict some of the wonders of the world in this unique work. Exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the American Folk Art Museum in NYC, published in New York Beauties, and the Quilt Engagement Calendar. The central ivory panel of the Taj Mahal is sewn on China silk that has begun to shred. It was hastily netted over for exhibition; this will be redone properly for the buyer.
