SIGNATURES ANTIQUE QUILT, signed C.W.B.M 1896, black ground

SIGNATURES ANTIQUE QUILT, signed C.W.B.M 1896, black ground
Pairs of embroidered names are angled to form diamond shapes. This is a fascinating and unusual design variation for a signature quilt. Mainstays of the late 19th century this type of quilt was a way in which people and organizations raised money for a cause.  People paid for the privilege of having their name added. Or this might have been created as a friendship offering for someone in the group, or a church director, or a departing friend. There are more than 100 names in this unusual design but no town. At one corner is the note Made by the Ladies of the C.W.B.M. 1896. Fabulous cursive embroidered signatures done in double rows form a diamond grid of many people with great flourishes to the letters. But why are they together on this quilt? Signed in the upper corner by additional names extending to the edge but unidentified as to the location. An astute geneologist could probably research their connection. A unique format in my experience collecting quilts. Exhibited in TEXT ON TEXTILES at Houston Quilt Festival.
