FOLKY FOUR-BLOCK APPLIQUE
| A unique bold scale folky composition. A triangular basket or pot is set at each corner and its long stemmed floral contents extended out toward the quilt center, making a symmetrical presentation that is all drama first. then the viewer realizes it is flowers! The flowers and stems are rustic abstractions but the color palette is classic-- red, cheddar and green on a white ground like its more conventional late 19th century applique counterparts. There is some color oxidation in the green. turning to brown in some areas. The quilt however is fresh unused professionally laundered having come right out of a storage trunk. The density and pattern of the quilting suggest a Southern origin.
