What an accomplishment to turn ephemeral textiles into a dynamic graphic composition with eye appeal for miles. Primarily solid color rayon strips are accented with fancy woven fabric bits at what would have been the red tiny 'hearth' squares at the center of each pieced square. That square construction seems to have disappeared within the diagonal bold lines defining the quilt surface. Deep pastels of solid jewel tone rayon satins were used in this atypical Log Cabin Straight Furrow variation pieced quilt. The hearth square in the piecing is done with a gold brocade, not the usual red. As this seems to be a dressy quilt, my guess is that it was pieced from party frocks by a quilter who might have made her daughter's prom dresses, or by a dressmaker with fancy yard goods, rather than by a quilter who used utilitarian cottons. If so, what a charming way to save happy memories
