KATE GREENAWAY BLACK FIGURES ANTIQUE SILK QUILT

KATE GREENAWAY BLACK FIGURES ANTIQUE SILK QUILT

How intriguing that all the figures - derived from Kate Greenaway patterns of young girls - are embroidered on black silk satin so to represent intentionally different black women. If this was not the intention then I think the face areas would have also been either embroidered in pink or white or would have had a little applique face  in caucasian skin tones. I think this is a rarity, as I have seen other such figural embroideries in quilts in which white or pink material was the foundation.

All the details are sewn in a refined, skillful fashion, including even the fuzzy three dimensional chicks. Monogramed, and the horseshoe is inscribed Good Luck

In wonderful condition throughout the body of the quilt, but the plaid silk taffeta border has  cracks and a bits of loss that can be easily overlaid with crepeline if the buyer would prefer.
