EXOTIC TOILE WHOLE CLOTH ANTIQUE QUILT
EXOTIC TOILE WHOLE CLOTH ANTIQUE QUILT
An exotic pictorial print of unknown location, possibly a representation of Africa or the Caribbean or other distant place that had been reported back to the Continent by explorers. This rosy toile probably was produced by an English or French factory in the late 18th or early 19th century. Captured in this one color print are Indians, tropical foliage, spotted jungle cats, etc. images unknown to most people except explorers at that time. A similar print in a whole cloth was included in the recent Metropolitan Museum exhibition on global textiles, dating from the 1770s and in the same rosy color.
