PENNY MAT OF 3-D RED FLOWERS IN SQUARE GRID

One of only two similarly constructed textiles I have ever encountered, in which the motifs are made from the tiny circles punched out of wool to create the hole in which the shank of a brass button is placed in a coat or jacket. Usually done for military garments. Collected in Massachusetts but possibly Canadian, (the red may be from uniforms of the Royal Canadian Mounties!) Sewn on to a backing of menswear suiting, and embroidered all around with briar stitching. Three dimensional flowers and leaves made from many thousands of discs perhaps about 1/4" in size.
