We don't know who she is| who carved her or for what purpose. But she has a lovely pensive face| with wavy hair cascading down both sides of her head| and a scarf covering her hair| all realistically well carved. Her head is slightly tilted and her mouth open a bit to reveal carved teeth. Supporting her right shoulder on the side is a carved acanthus leaf. The face| the head and the upper torso are carved on the front and sides only| the flat back suggests it rested in a niche or against a wall. The New York City newspaper fragments that cling to the base suggest she may have been an architectural carving for a local building| though she was found on Nantucket.
