One of the three iconic pieced designs of the Lancaster PA Amish community is the Bars pattern. The absence of corner blocks, termed 'floating', distills this graphic design to its essence, an austere composition often compared to modern art. Today collectors display these like contemporary art, with the Bars either vertical as originally sewn, or horizontally, as shown here. The slight 'pebbled' surface feel of this mid-century fabric is distinct to the Lancaster Amish subsequent to the earlier use of wool, being practical in terms of care, durability, ease of handling and color.
