SUITING 'PENNY MAT' QUILT, CLOVERS APPLIQUE

Sku:10715

The quilt version of a familiar handicraft--the penny mat--in which decorative wool circles are sewn to a utilitarian fabric background. Wool suiting squares in charcoal greys were organized so that lighter squares appear at regular intervals. Clover shapes of 3 circles were sewn to a larger round, just as in a 'penny mat', layered on and embroidered with wool yarn and blanket stitched. Usually a penny mat is made in a small size for a table mat. The decoration is made by tracing around coins (hence the name,| glassware, or china. An ambitious quiltmaker innovated that concept to make this full-size folky composition. Exhibited in MASTER PIECES: Haberdashery Textiles in Antique Quilts, NEQM.
