I love finding designs I have never seen before--this one is uncommon in terms of format and materials. The mosaic or honeycomb piecing for the diamond center has 1" hexagons in a variety of period wools with some velvet. The shades of brown in tobacco and chocolate used to frame or support the diamond have a rich depth of tone. The design may have been inspired by an old leather book binding, especially of family bibles of the late 19th century where a center diamond is applied along with raised elements at the corners of the rectangular surface. Old minor mends, and a couple of moth nibbles do not detract from the overall graphic impact of this unusual quilt. About to be exhibited at the International Quilt Festical in TOKYO JAPAN, January 201,2 in the Hexagons show at the Tokyo Dome Quilt Festival.
