STRIPED ANTIQUE COUNTERPANE CUT CORNERS New England, reds and white
Just two complementary early 19th century printed fabrics in this New England counterpane with cut corners to accomodate a four-poster bed. The deeper red print is classic 1840s golden-on-red print seen in many 'best' quilts and the lighter red is a delicate sprigged floral. In incredible untouched condition retaining its original bottom portion (which sometimes gets removed by others, what a shame). A remarkable find. The bottom adds another 20" to the length. Some users place the tail up at the head of the bed under the pillows to get use of the full width. I have also seen 'T' quilts like this dramatically displayed on the wall as people do with kimonos.
