A remarkably similar quilt is in the collection of the International Quilt Study Center (IQSC) Museum at the University of Nebraska. Probably one Pennsylvania woman made both (one for each child?) or devised this unusual concept that became a graphic design shared by her community. The museum's quilt has no provenance nor does this example, but they are rare to find. The monumental scale of the pattern is striking. The symmetry was achieved by folding fabric in four, then cutting out the intricate design and placing it on a background. The process' resemblance to the PA folk craft of paper cutting lends the term scherenschnitte to this quilt type. It is believed the design originated in Lancaster County, PA. A third example is in the Carolyn Miller collection, and research is being undertaken now to determine the possible connection among them. My example has the most detail - individual birds nestle among the foliate thistle like motifs. Condition is strong. Only issue is a subtle fade line where the quilt was folded.
