Gorgeous shades of red wine, gold, violet even blue hues add depth and luster to this creative twist on the tradittional pieced pattern called Sunshine and Shadow or Trip Around The World . In this bold graphic, a pieced top was probably cut in four equal sections and the directions turned so that a bold chevron pattern resulted instead of the classic concentric design. Dressmaker touches are seen in the quilted satin border, tiny ruffle edge, and the tiny symmetrical briar stitching at esch and every seam. This stitchery I find often in PA quilts from around Berks County, so this might be a Mennonite composition though its maker is unidentified. A sumptuous precursor to one of the most visually dramatic patterns of the early 20th century. Quilt is straight and squared; photo'd at a slight angle!
