These 'flannels' or 'blankets' were created when cigars went from being sold in bunches gathered with silk ribbons to being packed in shallow cedar wood boxes. The blankets cushioned the product, and quilters found them great to re-use as quilts, pillow faces, table mats, etc. because savvy manufacturers issued the flannels imprinted in varied series to encourage brand loyalty. The flags series is a favorite, others include little oriental rugs, college seals, Indians, ball players, etc. The flags in this series frame a central American flag, and probably represent countries that participated in various worlds fairs that were being organized regularly in the U.S. to showcase world arts and culture. Check out the rare full quilt we have that has 84 American flags only.
