LONG ISLAND CANDLEWICK ANTIQUE SPREAD, Howell Family

LONG ISLAND CANDLEWICK ANTIQUE SPREAD, Howell Family

Sku:10752

Beautifully embroidered at top and bottom by Cinderella Howell, Bayshore Long Island, and by Betsey Howell, Riverhead, Long Island. They placed their names so the spread could be used with either end up. Exquisitely rendered sunburst medallion with floral accents, plus an historically significant. documented whitework. Dated 1874, with their names and home towns bold.  Either both girls worked on it together or one made it as a gift for the other. The girls are from a founding family of Long Island whose history can be easily traced through the Southampton Historical Society and elsewhere. Beautiful variety of dimensional embroidery of leaves, grasses, wheat. Sewn in two panels joined with a center seam. Informally photographed outdoors so light from behind could better show the inscriptions and details. See entries for other pieces from the Howell Family -- Edna Jane Howell's 1838 jacquard wool and cotton coverlet, and Bestsey Howell's family framed sampler.
