Happy holidays. Treat yourself to an 1880s Pennsylvania classic Princess feather or other boldly colored quilt.
The NEW ENGLAND QUILT MUSEUM in Lowell, Massachusetts has just appointed me to their Board of Directors. It is a wonderful museum worthy of your visit, less than an hour outside of Boston in an historic mill town with much to see and do. The Museum deserves your support. They do such imaginative programming. On Mothers Day I gave a presentation called "QUILTY CONSCIENCE" discussing the influence of quilt nomenclature, aesthetics, construction techiniques, and history on material culture worldwide. On Saturday, July 19, along with Bob Shaw of the Shelburne Museum, collector/quilt expert Gerald Roy, and others I will take part in a symposium on collecting. See the museum website for more information.__________________________________________________________________________________________________ DIAMONDS AND BARS; THE ART OF THE AMISH PEOPLE is a new book written by Laura featuring the acclaimed Schlumberger Collection of Amish quilts just exhibited in Munich, Germany. "From the Bedroom to the Boardroom" is my English-language essay in this German publication. I compare the Amish aesthetic to the work of contemporary artists, review Amish history in America, and pose issues to reflect on when encountering these bold colorful quilts. "Diamonds and Bars" is now available in the U.S. or from the German museum Die Neue Sammlung. And of course we stock Amish quilts from every community in our gallery in NYC. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ The January 2008 issue of ART & ANTIQUES Magazine has a great article on bold quilts called STITCHES ACROSS BORDERS in which Laura is quoted. Quilts from the shop are featured here and in the collector story Fringe Elements. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ FISHER HERITAGE,305 EAST 61st STREET, NEW YORK, NY 10065 is now home to LAURA FISHER's acclaimed collection of antique quilts, hooked rugs, textiles, and American folk art. She showed stunning installations using quilts in homes and work environments put together by top designers and architects, and also shared how quilt imagery, language and construction concepts have permeated just about every media and design form worldwide. Do visit the exhibit in Delaware through September. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ countrylivingondemand.com has Laura Fisher on video on your computer offering tips for collecting antique quilts. See portions of the new gallery and quilt room by clicking on \\\\"collecting\\\\" when you access this new feature on line by the acclaimed \\\\"shelter\\\\" magazine. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ To inaugurate the new digs a specialty collection was gathered for which pieces will always be available--PROVOCATIVE PARALLELS: MODERN ART? ANTIQUE TEXTILES! to intrigue new collectors trending toward modern in their home decor. The quilts resemble familiar graphic designs of well-known 20th century artists like Josef Albers, Sol LeWitt, Frank Stella, Bridget Riley, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Sean Scully and others. Here is fabulous art for your walls at a fraction of the cost of a comparable painting by one of those contemporary masters. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ THRILLED TO PIECES: THE AWESOME INTRICACY OF MULTI-PIECED QUILTS ran from January through April 2005 at the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts. 26 intriguing examples of quilts containing from 1,000 to upwards of 35,000 pieces were shown at this important museum that preserves and educates about our quilt heritage. This show expanded my exhibition IN A THOUSAND PIECES first shown at the Museum of the American Quilters Society in Paducah, Kentucky. Multitudinous pieced quilts are fascinating. They seem more like sculpture than needlework. They are built in a different way from the traditional quilt format in which a pieced pattern block might alternate with an open block on which to show off quilting. These tiny postage stamp pieces - one inch, one half-inch, even three-eights of an inch - challenge the ingenuity of quiltmakers. Complex graphic patterns hark back to the mosaic tileworks of ancient cultures, yet can seem so modern in their geometry. While some examples put to good use the smallest scraps of fabric in what might be considered frugal handiwork, in others it is apparent the fabrics and colors were chosen to achieve a distinct graphic design. These quilts demonstrate the imagination, dexterity and patience of their makers. Some feature tiny squares only, but there are also examples made with triangles, rectangles, hexagons or diamonds. These geometric shape either were used alone or in some stunning combinations. Plans are in the works to travel the exhibition worldwide with stops in France and Japan. Contact us at 212/838-2596, or the Museum at 978/452-4207 for further information. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ HISTORIC HOOKED RUGS: A line of brand new hooked rugs created by Laura Fisher and colleagues, was introduced in mid-January 2005. 14 designs were offered, chosen primarily from Fisher's acclaimed collection of antique hooked rugs. The rugs are hooked of cotton tape in India. Contact us for information. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________
