Lush floral border surrounds ac detailed vignette of architecture, landscape and a bird aloft. Lovingly inscribed and misspelled "Done by Mary Jones for her respcted parnts in her 10th year". Colors still fresh, white ground unusual. Original gilded frame has losses but can be re-gilded or replaced.

A rare rare discovery, depicting what is said to be Old St. Patrick's Church on Mott Street in lower Manhattan. Likely sewn in a female academy established to educate less-than-wealthy often immigrant girls. The monument/tomb with its urn atop is inscribed "In memory of I. Wilkins. The Hebrew inscription reads "Here is Jerusalem, Learning Place of Solomon, Site of the Temple. These "motto" needlework pictures were printed on heavy paper containing thousands of punched holes (sometimes called Berlinwork for the place of origin of the imported paper design). The (usually) immigrant buyer would embroider it and hang in the home. This and a companion punchwork depicting Mizrah/the East, dated 1902, came from a Brooklyn home. Maker unknown. Charming little pictorials surround the figures of Adam & Eve beneath a flowering tree and standing before a green lawn. The verse above begins "In Zion Let us All Appear. Origin uncertain, similar lawn and sheep formats appear in Pennsylvani and New England needleworks. Dated but unsigned. Intense wording and charming images combine in this hard to find Vermont sampler. Above the Federal period house is an older and yonger girl and numerous tree and flower motifs. Ther verse in two panels fills the top half of the needlework in irregular charming lettering. Geneology wil be done for purchaser.

The Pennocks were a leading Philadelphia family in the early 19th century. This Quaker sampler is traditional in format and appearance, with black threads on a linen ground and other elements that place it geographically and historically. Sentiment along the sampler bottom reads "Who lives to nature rarely can be poor, Who lives to fancy rarely can be rich."Philadelphia provenance easily accessible as much has been written about the Pennock family. Unframed. In 'as found' condition with some staining that can be easily professionally remedied.

The maker of this distinctive sampler fashioned the Temple of such large scale that it fills almost the entire picture. Above it is a religious sentiment: 'Lord take my heart and let it be Forever close to all but the ......" (undecipherable). Among the folky touches are Hannah's signature placed vertically on the left side of the composition. The old frame's deep red stain complements the stitchery.

Rebeca sewed this sentiment: "If I am right thy grace impart, still in the right to stay, if I am wrong oh teach my heart to find that better way." She signed and dated it Rebeca Frances Work aged 9, Feb. 26, 1839. A note accompanying it states she travelled to the U.S. from England several years before undertaking this charming sampler.
