SILK LOG CABIN COURTHOUSE STEPS CRIB QUILT

  • 28" x 38"
  • late 19th c
  • Excellent
  • $ 1,475.00
  • available

WS 10769

Everything is scaled down for this crib quilt, though can't imagine it was meant for a child's use as it contains formal decorative silks. Just right for to hang on a wall, though. Each square is under 3" of scintillating colorful silks whose light and dark tones dance about the quilt surface. Pattern is called COURTHOUSE STEPS variation. Original green silk ribbon binding.

FOUR POINT STAR or ROCKY ROAD, silk

  • 60" sq
  • late 19th c
  • Excellent, minor breaks
  • $ 1,475.00
  • available

WS 10749

Dynamic configuration incorporates crazy quilt-type piecing in a traditional geometric pattern called variously FOUR POINT, "KITE" or ROCKY ROAD TO KANSAS, among other titles. The larger scale of the nine stars permits the inclusion of many small bits of Victorian silk. Unlike a crazy quilt there is no embroidery to feminize the geometry, but the Victorian quiltmaker could not resist the flourish of a red ruffle. Striking with the multicolor silk bits against black. Excellent condition, a few minor inevitable silk breaks, but nothing to interfere with the enjoyment of the quilt.

SILK CHEVRONS

  • 60" square
  • 1880s
  • Excellent
  • $ 2,950.00

WS 10724

Simple, but simply stunning. Narrow angled strips of plain and figured silks, probably from cravats and dressing gowns of the late Victorian period, make three sets of chevron bands. Rich deep colors. Can be hung vertically or horizontally. Powerful image works as well in modern interior as in one with antiques.

VELVET BOWTIES

  • 64" x 66"
  • turn of the 20th c
  • excellent untouched c
  • $ 1,250.00

WS 10613

Sumptuous cut velvet home furnishings fabrics in earth tones have an illuminated woodland palette of greens and golds and browns that is special and thoughtful (sorry-picture colors are a bit sharp; actual quilt is warm toned). Small scale (about 3") blocks of these jacquard floral weaves are arrayed in a classic BOWTIE pieced pattern joined with a 1/2" wide sashing that makes for a refined composition. Colors much richer in person, fabrics were used for home furnishings, draperies, dramatic outerwear clothing at the turn of the 20th century. A best-of-kind example; very few are ever seen.

Gorgeous colors seem like every shade of wine, along with golden hues step up the appeal of a classic pattern. Dressmaker touches include the wine quilted satin border with the tiny ruffle edge. Sumptuous precursor to one of the most visually dramatic patterns of the early 20th century.

This sophisticated interpretation has random shaped pieces joined first into diamond shapes, then arranged as rows or strips. Initialled M.E.W. Bordered in black silk satin quilted in one-inch diamonds like that used for lapels of Victorian dressing gowns or smoking jackets. Near mint condition, occasional silk splits, nearly invisible among the more than 1,000 small pieces.

Beautifully rendered wildflowers and grasses are embroidered on velvet diamonds, mostly black but some a rich brown. Set in a diamond lattice sashing, everything is accented with double rows of white stitching that looks like interlacing. Embroidery of the type was usually done for Victorian crazy quilts, so to find this beauty on sturdier velvet is a special discovery. Backing is homespun linen

'LAYERED' FANS VELVET PIECED QUILT a cover gir

  • 80" square
  • early 20th c
  • Excellent untouched
  • $ 5,800.00
  • available

WS 10714

This vibrant Fans variation quilt is the cover illustration for Robert Shaw's new book "American Quilts: The Democratic Art 1780-2007"(published Oct 2009). The fans are organized so the quilt face appears three-dimensional, as if several squared layers of decreasing size are layered. Irresistible colors, rich solid velvets in teal, ochre, intense rose. Small almost unseen 'ties' anchor the layers, instead of stitching, adding another lively element. A swell and unusual discovery.
