WS 40037

A rare find--SIGNED along the lower border PHILADELPHIA 1804 WILLIAM AND JANE STUART. Monumental size with original fringe, as easy to use today as it was 200 years ago! Textured ribbed handwoven background, raised detail with a center star medallion, various stars and raised geometric motifs as a result of the complex weaving process; woven in two panels, center seam. IN PHOTOS THE CONTRAST IS EXAGGERATED TO SHOW THE DETAILS; ACTUAL COLOR IS A LOVELY WARM DEEP IVORY ECRU. Haven't done geneological research yet, wonder who they were that they wanted their names so bold on their marital bedspread!

Possibly New Hampshire origin as suggested by the geometric grid quilted in double parallel lines. The diamonds formed each contain a flower and leaf motif (tulips?). Remarkable original condition, especially considering its age. Reverse is a golden yellow wool on which quilting is more visible than on the saturated indigo front.

WS 10475

Pieced Four-Patch and One-Patch squares using three different colors, set on the diagonal in a Straight Furrow like pattern, are unusual enough to find in a linsey woolsey quilt, but coupled with that sumptuous glazed indigo calimanco border -- priceless! Had to have, despite splits and flaws consistent with age, which are minor condition issues given the entirety of the quilt--combining piecing, color, age, historic scarcity.

WS 10183

What an exciting combination of chintz flowers cut out and appliqued in the Broderie Perse technique to fill the diamond-shaped areas created by the pieced chain pattern. In this 150+ years-old historic quilt, the coloration is classic and timeless; rusty reds, natural green, some blue, golden earth tones and ivory. It has never been laundered; the age browning from storage might lighten with a professional cleaning, but many prefer to leave such an early example as found.
