Unusual form of tramp art for the frame, fashioned with half discs layered to a nice depth, instead of being chip carved like sawteeth. In addition to layered discs there is a wide raised panel all around with incised cross hatching. Now framing a bevelled 'antiqued' mmirror. Wonderful burnished honey color varnish

Superb painting, by an obvious though unnamed artist, best of kind for this form of home hobby in New England, where china painters also took to painting frames for mirrors, often to sell to travelling tourists! Daisies and black eyed Susans in one corner extending onto the mirror, lakeside tree'd landscape on the other corner. meant to hang originally as a diamond shape. PLEASE DISREGARD REFLECTION OF BEDSTEADS IN MIRROR!

SAILOR'S ROPEWORK FRAME, KNOTBOARD

  • 43" x 49"
  • early 20th c
  • manila rope, cotton, wood
  • Excellent
  • $ 4,500.00

WS 30095

Monumental artistic exercise probably by a sailor with time on his hands. An old Victorian frame has been transformed with a skilled c omplex of ropework--wide outeer frame, then white or gold embellishment, intricate corners, flat planes, etc., slight arch to the top of the interior. Now framing a sample board with a variety of rope knot exercises, this center could be removed and used separately leaving the rope frame to enclose a substantial size mirror. Found in New England, disregard the sold tag, that's from when I bought it but couldn't carry it away.

Hard to find very tall 'vanity' mirror, as most as under 3' square. Lovely shaded roses surround the new 'antiqued' bevelled mirror. Painted with a loose and free hand for an impressionistic portrayal of roses and landscape on a 1' thick pine frame

  • late 19th c
  • wood
  • Very good
  • $ 875.00

WS 30097

I am always intrigued by the unusual configuration in tramp art, like this one where clusters of chip carved layered strips are arranged diagonally to give a ribbed impression to the frame. Corner blocks chip carved, and segments rotated to form chevrons at the center of each side. Unvarnished, weathered wood tone.
