Tour de force "sampler" needlepoint with detailed squares of many different flowers and geometric motifs. Supple enough for a bed or a throw, probably originally a small carpet. A prancing horse surrounded by roses in a sawtooth edged table mat or small rug is one of the icons of Amish needlework. One of several hand-woven woolen cloths from Tibet, said to be used as apron coverings for the lower torso. Three narrow panels of homespun home-dyed wools in rich colors. Cloths have both its string ties not fully shown in photo. Ask to see photos of all the others, two shown here. Lush floral border surrounds ac detailed vignette of architecture, landscape and a bird aloft. Lovingly inscribed and misspelled "Done by Mary Jones for her respcted parnts in her 10th year". Magnificent and unusual homespun linen bedspread with fine needlework floral clusters and border all around. Made by Emma L. Blank, Age 83, in 1923 as indicated in corner signature portion; found in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Heavyweight, flax color linen woven prior to the date of embroidery, no doubt. The Hebrew inscription reads "Here is Jerusalem, Learning Place of Solomon, Site of the Temple. These "motto" needlework pictures were printed on heavy paper containing thousands of punched holes (sometimes called Berlinwork for the place of origin of the imported paper design). The (usually) immigrant buyer would embroider it and hang in the home. This and a companion punchwork depicting Mizrah/the East, dated 1902, came from a Brooklyn home. Maker unknown. Charming little pictorials surround the figures of Adam & Eve beneath a flowering tree and standing before a green lawn. The verse above begins "In Zion Let us All Appear. Origin uncertain, similar lawn and sheep formats appear in Pennsylvani and New England needleworks. Dated but unsigned. The maker of this distinctive sampler fashioned the Temple of such large scale that it fills almost the entire picture. Above it is a religious sentiment: 'Lord take my heart and let it be Forever close to all but the ......" (undecipherable). Among the folky touches are Hannah's signature placed vertically on the left side of the composition. The old frame's deep red stain complements the stitchery.
