Original linen string has broken but is still there, could be restrung to display. Expressive face, and something quite special

Who made it and why is unknown, found in Massachusetts

This quirky gameboard looks (and weighs!) like marble but is actually glass painted in green and caramel, as well as plain white squares, on the reverse. Is this checkers, or some other game given the third color of squares? Substantial mahagony frame; wonderful decorative appeal.

MATERIALS: the clothing is original cotton plaid fabric, black lisle jersey socks on stuffing-plumped legs, leather 6-button shoes (probably a child's), a red felt peaked hat; the figure has a papier mache head, mohair hair, glass button eyes, and a wood (pine?) upper torso framework inside. The paint is original, including the row of well defined small white teeth on the bottom. The arms end in carved wooden hands with nicely detailed fingers and nails. The jaw is moveable so that the figure "speaks" when the drawstring in the open-back clothing is pulled. Mounted on a contemporary wood base. We don't know his performing name or who used him in his act, but he has a winning countenance, a wonderful stature, and would be happy to reside in your collection.

VICTORIAN CLOTH BABY'S BALL

  • 31" circumference, 8" high
  • c. 1880s
  • cotton, stuffed probably with cotton
  • Not perfectly round a
  • $ 395.00
  • available

WS 30008

Each wedge-shaped segment of the ball is chromolithographed with scenes of a baby engaged in various activities as would befit a Victorian child. Each action is titled in print beneath. When the pieces were cut out from the pattern and sewn together, a red star came together at the center of the ball, top and bottom. This is in pretty terrific condition considering its ephemeral quality, its use and its age.
