"TILE" CRAZY QUILT, wool

  • 60" x 70"
  • late 19th c
  • excellent
  • $ 1,675.00
  • available

WS 10767

Random shaped pieces of wool are appliqued to a foundation fabric and outline embroidered in double rows of stitchery, rather than being pieced together as in traditional crazy quilts. This tile technique is usually seen only in cotton crazy quilts. Possibly made as a hired hand's bed covering, but embellished to relieve the somberness of the heavier wool suiting in it.

A harlequin concept interpreted in fabric. this Log Cabin is pieced with wool challis prints in strips with a black ground along with jacquard figured beige strips. The small scale of the blocks and careful construction, down to the tiny red and black 'hearth'squares, makes it desirable. So named for the increasingly shorter log strips ascending to the centers. Perfect size to hang on the wall.

WS 10728

FANS as the pieced blocks in dark, saturated color wools are a favorite winter quilt pattern in Pennsylvania, I have discovered, and this one is top notch. Late Victorian, though wool it is as lavishly embroidered all over with fancy stitchery as if it were silk. The jaunty diagonal strips border further energizes it. Meant to chase the winter blues away, it has a heavier batting, so it is cosy and graphic.

Jewel tone color wool challis prints contrasted with black is one of the most potent aesthetic choices seen in log cabin quilts. Narrow strips under 1/2" wide add up to several thousand pieces. Black has variety too,the shades adding the mystery and patina of this bold optical illusion. Superb condition, dynamic graphic

Beautiful palette emphasizing blue'd reds and wine colors. Solid color woolens. An interesting border treatment is in two colors, the opposing sides in a tea rose and a deeper claret (photo foreshortens the image, all borders symmetrical and balanced; mitred corners. The pattern is pieced skillfully so that a bowtie form appears in each diamond, and the course of the color changes seems coordinated.
