  • mid 19th c
  • Excellent undisturbed original condition
  • $ 3,500.00

WS 30101

Beautifully rendered articulated figure of a black woman in Civil War era calico clothing. Photos do not do justice to the face and details. Articulated arms have elegant long fingered wooden hands; carefully carved feet. Body is padded beneath period clothing--blouse, skirt, petticoat, head kerchief. Original linen string has broken but is still there, could be restrung to display. Expressive face, and something quite special

WS 10615

Six blocks are filled with applique figures probably from bible stories, in the manner of the renowned Harriet Powers slave-made bible quilt now in the Smithsonian. It's possible the maker of this piece saw pictures of the Powers quilt and made her own version. Sophisticated black/grey/white palette of suiting, other wools and some cotton. Intended to be hung on the wall; no batting or backing.

A sinuous serpentine path of yellow meanders through the red ground in this southern African American traditional yet rarely seen pattern. Said to prevent evil spirits from getting to the sleeper, thanks to the twisting lines. Bold and intriguing.

AFRICAN AMERICAN CHILDREN CRIB/TRUNDLE QUILT

  • 34" x 46"
  • 1930-40
  • Cotton
  • Excellent untouched c
  • $ 775.00

WS 10618

Charming vignettes of children at chores and at play embroidered in cotton floss, united with pieced sashing in a gender neutral combination of blue and pink. Tight black french knots represent African American curly hair in an ethnic representation that is unusual to my experience. Presuming this was a published pattern, was the hair indicated on the stamped pattern, or was it the quilt maker's personalization for an African American child?!

SNAKE PATH

  • 64" x 68"
  • 1930s
  • Excellent, unused
  • $ 1,275.00

WS 10543

Exciting, dynamic, the little serpentine curvy "paths" actually look like the local name given to the design. Pieced of the same element as the Double Wedding Ring pattern but rotated and aligned to create the sinuous echoing rows filing the quilt surface. Feedsacks from the 1930s and muslin. Age discoloration at edges in photo now gone, professionally laundered. Design mythologized as giving protection to the sleeper from evil spirits in the night!

Two quilts in one!! The one side is a group of twelve blocks in the WHITE HOUSE STEPS log cabin variation pattern (some might call it House Top similar to Gee's Bend designs); the other is pieced in large and small squares in narrow panels like a Bars pattern. Filled with great feedsacks prints in large enough pieces to really appreciate.

WS 10498

Usually made up into small pillow faces of about 14" square, this pattern explodes as a monumental exercise in piecing. Triangles of fabric are folded and layered one row atop the previous one for a truly three-dimensional tactile result. Bold, stunning, rarely seen graphic.

BARS work clothing CRAZY strips

  • 64" x 78"
  • 1920-30s

  • Excellent
  • $ 1,375.00

WS 10500

This dramatic, abstract modern-looking visual transforms a simple construction. The slim BARS strips are pieced of mostly work clothing scraps of random size and shape. Great palette of warm neutrals comes from the heavy cotton broadcloth, flannel shirts, twill pants and shirts cut up to recycle into this striking quilt.

UNIQUE AFRICAN AMERICAN STEREOTYPE FIGURES

  • 64 x 81"
  • 1950s
  • Excellent untouched
  • $ 2,300.00
  • available

WS 10483

What extraordinary effort went in to hand-drawing the many characters and scenes for each square. The inspiration is printed 1950s tablecloths showing stereotype vignettes, a sad but real commentary on the race relations of the time before the civil rights movement changed society. The joining squares at the intersections of the red sashing are pieces cut from such tablecloths. The reverse side is a complete tablecloth, framed with red and printed cotton pieced Fans blocks! This unique quilt is a window into both the handicraft and history of the mid-20th century.
