Handsome, unusual,fabuloously appealing colors, superb workmanship, composition, all present in this striking quilt. Nine symmetrical compass motifs each encircled twice by sawtooth patterns that give movement to the image. Sawtooth inner border too. Initialled and dated. Taken from 19th century album quilt imagery, this 20th century version has a classic shape urn overflowing with cheerful red flowers and greenery. Elegant and beautifully crafted in terms of the piecing and the quilting. The Compasses have many precisely shaped points creating perfect circles, and are a commanding presence against the white background.Emphasizing their geometry dimensional quilting encircles each motif. The zigzag-y border is a Delectable Mountains variation in red and green prints. It is a characteristic Maryland design hallmark.
