A 'Marseilles' woven bedspread of rare appearance, with palm tree motifs woven in a soft red. Traditional Marseilles spreads replicate the handquilted 18th century whitework of France, and are all white. Manufactured primarily in England before the turn of the 20th century. This is perhaps the second or third Marseilles with motifs woven in color that I have ever seen. The technique here is the best quality, emulating trapunto quilting in whitework with raised motifs everywhere.

Different from traditional whiteworks which have a center medallion format, this one has fascinating graphic appeal thanks to its circular wreaths separated by serpentine rows that border it all around. Exquisite early quilting. Timeless visual appeal. Quickly photographed outdoors so that sunlight from behind could illuminate the quilting patterns. The vivid multicolor floral borders would have seen other use as the hem of draperies, no doubt. This red paisley whole cloth quilt is as uncommon as it is charming. The vitality of the curling boteh or pine cone forms, derived from the classic paisley shawl motif, is accentuated by the fresh red ground.
