  • 79" x 82"
  • 1880s
  • Excellent, minor old mend
  • $ 9,500.00

WS 10785

A monumental graphic created from an elementary format--the pieced top made first as a Bars alternating tobacco and brilliant blue wool, then cut in four quadrants and their directions rotated to achieve this powerful image. Remarkably modern graphic from a quilt that dates from the last quarter of the 19th century and from a religious based community, most likely Amish or Mennonite Lancaster County, PA origin.

"TILE" CRAZY QUILT, wool

  • 60" x 70"
  • late 19th c
  • excellent
  • $ 1,675.00
  • available

WS 10767

Random shaped pieces of wool are appliqued to a foundation fabric and outline embroidered in double rows of stitchery, rather than being pieced together as in traditional crazy quilts. This tile technique is usually seen only in cotton crazy quilts. Possibly made as a hired hand's bed covering, but embellished to relieve the somberness of the heavier wool suiting in it.

LOG CABIN LIGHT AND DARK grosgrain ribbons

  • 70" x 84" (twin, dougle, queen
  • 1930s
  • Excellent untouched
  • $ 1,175.00
  • available

WS 10758

How unusual and eminently sensible to use grosgrain ribbons as the narrow strips that make up the Log Cabin blocks, as that saved much effort cutting fabric. The LIGHT AND DARK name reflects the crisp-edged large diamonds that alternate those tones. The ribbons are in glorious deep pastel colors (a little washed out here by overhead light, but fresh in person)and several borders of them frame the composition.

NINE BLOCK 'SQUARED' FLORAL WREATHS Sandra Mit

  • 83" square
  • 1860s
  • Excellent, crisp
  • $ 3,750.00
  • available

WS 10726

From the estate of renowned Ohio dealer/collector Sandra Mitchell, in her favored color palette. Unusual, perhaps unique squared shape for a floral wreath applique, repeated nine times on a fantastic apricot color tiny print ground, blocks intersected with small red motifs. Superb craftsmanship as in of all Sandra's 'saves.' Cable quilting in the border. One water spot toward the edge reveals the subordinate color of the overprinted 1860s fabric. Pennsylvania origin.

25-PATCH DIAMONDS feedsacks on turquoise

  • 74" x 78"
  • 1930s
  • Excellent untouched
  • $ 1,150.00
  • available

WS 10729

Red and turquoise are such an appealing color combination that I will always carry great examples for you to fill a whole house, though they are not easy to find. Feedsack prints in strong colors are pieced into large diamond shapes. The red at their centers unite across the quilt surface to form a squared red grid. Very textured quilting in addition to the fresh bright historic fabrics. A best of kind.

'PENNY MAT' QUILT WITH CLOVERS

  • 68" x 72"
  • early 20th c
  • Very good condition, minor restoration , white spot is on photo only
  • $ 2,850.00
  • available

WS 10715

The quilt version of a familiar handicraft--the penny mat--in which decorative wool circles are sewn to a utilitarian fabric background. Wool suiting squares in charcoal greys were organized so that lighter squares appear at regular intervals. Clover shapes of 3 circles were sewn to a larger round, just as in a 'penny mat', layered on, embroidered with wool yarn, and blanket stitched. Usually done as a small size table mat. Decoration made by tracing around coins(hence the name), glassware, china. An ambitious quiltmaker innovated that concept for this full-size, folky composition. SPOT IS ON PHOTO NOT QUILT

PRIZE RIBBONS PIECED QUILT

  • 68" x 72"
  • Dated 1914 and more
  • Excellent , minor abrasion on a couple of ribbons
  • $ 1,895.00
  • available

WS 10716

Ribbons imprinted with an intertwined letters mongram (AB or BA). Ribbons are dated over several years, and for various prize levels including first, second, third, and honorable mention. But, for what organization, what subject, what feat?! Will take research to connect the ribbons to a fair, show, or contest. It is likely these ribbons were obtained from the manufacturer rather than won by an accomplished entrant, because of the volume of ribbons with the same color and award level. Fun, . Exhibited TEXT ON TEXTILES: Words As Design in Antique Quilts, Houston International Quilt Festival, October 2009.

COLLEGE CIGAR 'FLANNELS'

  • 76" w x 66" h
  • turn of the 20th cen
  • Crisp untouched
  • $ 850.00
  • available

WS 10686

A real find in many ways: cigar box 'flannels' from American COLLEGES. I have never seen these before, have had flannels from various series like flags of many nations, oriental rugs, etc. This one is just great--perhaps the entire series made available by one cigar company, replicating the flags of many different colleges whose names we all know. Crisp untouched condition, a quilt top that could be easily backed. These rectangular 'flannels' were used to cushion the cigars when cedar boxes were introduced as a way to buy cigars.

HAWAIIAN 'MONARCHY' CRIB QUILT

  • 36" square
  • 1950s
  • $ 1,100.00
  • available

WS 10678

An unusual discovery is a crib size quilt done in the distinctive Hawaiian applique manner and reflecting the textile history of the islands. The crown at center represents Hawaiian royalty and was the motif seen on many of the earliest Hawaiian monarchy quilts, here copied a half century later in diminutive form.
