Beautifully embroidered at top and bottom by Cinderella Howell, Bayshore Long Island, and by Betsey Howell, Riverhead, Long Island, placed so the spread could be used with either end up. Exquisitely rendered sunburst medallion with floral accents, plus an historically significant. documented whitework. Dated 1874, their names and home towns bold Either both girls worked on it together, or one made it as a gift for the other. The girls are from a founding family of Long Island whose history can be easily traced through the Southampton Historical Society and elsewhere. Beautiful variety of dimensional embroidery of leaves, grasses, wheat. Sewn in two panels joined with a center seam. Informally photographed outdoors so light from behind could better show inscriptions and details.

The stencilled name ABRAM HENNION is clue to the NEW JERSEY origin of this bolder album quilt. Though some might think it to be Maine because of the M.E., that stands for Methodist Episcopal Ladies Aid Society. Has significant hallmarks of format, motif, and color that link it a known examples of New Jersey album sampler quilts.
