EAGLES, HEARTS PA. BIEDERWAND COVERLET

  • 78 x 84
  • pre-1850
  • Excellent
  • $ 895.00
  • available

WS 40052

Chic, atypical color combination of red, chocolate brown and cream. Unusual center with two medallions, plus two wide pictorial borders -- the inner one of the classic American eagle with a ribbon banner in its beak; the outer border of hearts. Quite a different format from the classic Biederwands (single weave PA coverlets) that have a single central medallion and three borders). In this damask weave example, wide border panels appear opposite each other, with no images at the foot. The reverse side is the dark, rich ground with cream accents. Unsigned, but with research perhaps this format and motifs can be attributed to one of the Pennsylvania weavers.

  • 80" x 100"square
  • 1930-40
  • Crisp untouched
  • $ 1,485.00

WS 10747

This House pattern variation was published in HOME SWEET HOME: The House in American Folk Art, because it is infrequently seen compared to other house designs. Distinguishing elements include the earthy color scheme that turns out to be well suited to todays interiors; the piecing, including angled strips for the roof and high horizontal windows, a break with tradition. This conveys a house of larger volume(resembling today's suburban architecture, yet decades older).

AMERICAN FLAGS CIGAR FLANNELS QUILT

  • 78" x 86"
  • late 19-early 20c
  • Excellent untouched
  • $ 2,750.00
  • available

WS 10737

Eighty-four American Flag cigar 'flannels' or 'blankets' make a unique quilt of 'pop art' type imagery, repeated the same iconic motif across the quilt surface. The 'blankets' were printed in various series to collect, and protected cigars when cedar box packaging was first introduced. Most cigar quilts are random assortments made with a variety of international flags; this example demonstrates either brand loyalty or diligent collecting. Graphic and historic.

WS 10739

Sixteen 48-star flags were united in a smaller size quilt intended for a chaise or as a decorative accent. A clever way to preserve such textile ephemera from earlier eras. 'Parade' flags were produced in rolls of yardage that were cut for the individual flags to be posted on sticks otherwise displayed.

CIGAR SILKS PIECED QUILT black and gold

  • 60' sq
  • late 19-early 20c
  • Excellent, some fraying
  • $ 4,500.00
  • available

WS 10740

A design decision to alternate gold cigar ribbons imprinted with brand names with strips of solid black silk has produced a fanstastic graphic design. Prior to the advent of cedar boxes, cigars were sold tied in bunches with ribbons bearing brand names; thousands of brands existed in the 19th-early 20th centuries. Victorian-Edwardian periodicals showed quiltmakers how to reuse the ribbons in decorative household accents, most often pillows or tablemats ranging in size from about 20" to 36". Larger quilts are rare. There is minor fraying in some of the cigar ribbons in one area, they do not detract from the overall drama and utility of this quilt.

WHEEL OF FORTUNE SUBSCRIPTION QUILT

  • 78" square
  • c. early 20th c
  • Excellent condition
  • $ 1,175.00

WS 10685

Thirty six "wheels" each cut from a single piece of turkey red fabric rather than having pieced spokes. Each spoke signed in white embroidery thread with the name of a person who contributed money to participate in a fund-raising effort or friendship project. Lots of names, but as I recall, couldn't find the town or group affiliation. I'll let the purchaser have fun deciphering it. Summer weight quilt with a backing but no batting.
