CHEVRONS

  • 79" x 82"
  • 1880s
  • Excellent, minor old mend
  • $ 9,500.00
  • available

WS 10785

A monumental graphic created from an elementary format--the pieced top made first as a Bars alternating tobacco and brilliant blue wool, then cut in four quadrants and their directions rotated to achieve this powerful image. Remarkably modern graphic from a quilt that dates from the last quarter of the 19th century and from a religious based community, most likely Amish or Mennonite Lancaster County, PA origin.

Handsome, unusual, fabuloously appealing colors, superb workmanship, composition, all present in this striking quilt. A fine example of classic PA Mennonite aesthetic.

'STRING' STARS ON BLACK SATEEN

  • 84 sq
  • 1920s
  • Excellent
  • $ 3,750.00

WS 10787

Each star arm is pieced of little bits or shards of early 20th century prints that glow against the black cotton sateen ground. Quilted in white to be visible against the dark ground. The nine repeat pieced blocks in a large square quilt format suggest a southeast PA origin. A penultimate example of a rustic quiltmaking form, making stars from fabric bits.

AMISH 'BRICK STEPS'

  • 72" x 84" (double,.queen bed)
  • 1940s
  • Excellent untouched condition
  • $ 2,750.00
  • available

WS 10778

Rich deep colors, visually dynamic design. Midwest AMISH. The BRICK STEPS pattern radiates out from its center in concentric "stepped' diamonds that are formed of small rectangles about 1 5/8" x 3 5/8" each. Navy blue, marine blue, and forest green cotton. 1/2" grey binding (not visible in photo). Quilted with white thread, an Amish tradition to make stitches visible against a darker background. Several quilting patterns: a feather variation for the 7" wide outer border, teacup quilting next on the inner border, and "outline" quilting stitches about 1/4" in from each seam of the pieces. A graphic departure from the repeat block format we associate with some midwestern Amish rectangular shape quilts. The outer and inner borders relationship suggests a Holmes County, Ohio origin.

UNUSUAL PRINCESS FEATHER APPLIQUE

  • 68" x 80"
  • 1880s
  • Excellent untouched
  • $ 2,175.00
  • available

WS 10754

I have not seen this pattern before; it is a distinctive variation of the Prince's or Princess Feather with 'straight' feather motifs rather than the more typical curved. The eight appliqued 'feathers' encircle a center dot. Cut out reverse applique details embellish each tip. Distinctive colors too-a cordovan/ deep terra cotta for the applique motifs; classic Pennsylvania cheddar as the background. A symmetrical cordovan border frames the entire quilt (not all shown in the photo).

SCHERENSCHNITTE PA. APPLIQUE Birds Thistles

  • 86" square
  • 1890
  • Excellent, minor fade mark
  • $ 5,800.00
  • available

WS 10732

An identical applique quilt is in the International Quilt Study Center Museum Collection at the Univ. of Nebraska. One Pennsylvania woman likely made both (one for each child), or this graphic concept was a community shared design. The monumental scale applique is made by folding fabric in four and cutting out the curvalinear design (just as in paper cutting) then,in quiltmaking, placing the motif on a background. Individual birds nestle among the heightened foliate motifs. There is a small fade line where the quilt was uppermost when folded.

ONE PATCH DIAMOND-IN-A-SQUARE

  • 80" square
  • c. 1940s
  • Excellent condition
  • $ 1,975.00
  • available

WS 10054

A pieced "Sunshine and Shadow" pattern set within a pieced "square" combines two of the classic eastern Amish quilt patterns in one, but no provenance came with the quilt. The fabrics are yummy, the rayon-cotton gabardine of men's 1940s shirts Backing is original, but there is no batting inside, so the quilt is more summer weight.

AMISH 'LOG CABIN BARN RAISING' wool

  • 64" x 74"
  • late 19th c
  • Excellent
  • $ 5,500.00
  • available

WS 10521

Bold, vibrant composition. Simple saturated color scheme has a powerful visual impact. So modern and compelling though a century + old and from a contained community. Multiple borders, "eyes" of blue in the center of each square, echoed in the narrow borders.

AMISH SAWTOOTH DIAMOND

  • 84" sq
  • 1880s-90s
  • Excellent, one minor
  • $ 3,600.00

WS 10642

Classic classic classic- deep forest green accented with dawn rose in a bold graphic that reads modern though more than a century old. Lancaster County, PA origin, might be Mennonite rather than Amish, some patterns span communities. Great classic quilting too.

AMISH SUNSHINE AND SHADOW unusual

  • 78" sq
  • late 19th century
  • all wool
  • Excellent, some age p
  • $ 8,500.00
  • available

WS 10643

Eye-catching variation of one of the three iconic Lancaster County, PA classic Amish designs. The SUNSHINE AND SHADOW pieced center is far smaller than usual, and set within an unsually wide red border. Someone was thinking outside the box, which typically is disdained in this community. Beautiful color combination, classic lush quilting.
