MARSEILLES BEDSPREAD with RED PALM TREES

  • 82" x 86"
  • 1880s
  • Excellent untouched
  • $ 1,350.00
  • available

WS 20229

A 'Marseilles' woven bedspread of rare appearance, with palm tree motifs woven in a soft red. Traditional Marseilles spreads replicate the handquilted 18th century whitework of France, and are all white. Manufactured primarily in England before the turn of the 20th century. This is perhaps the second or third Marseilles with motifs woven in color that I have ever seen. The technique here is the best quality, emulating trapunto quilting in whitework with raised motifs everywhere.

NEW YORK STATE 'ALBUM' APPLIQUE

  • 82" sq
  • 1860-70
  • Crisp untouched
  • $ 2,650.00
  • available

WS 10765

Two different applique patterns, one like an oak leaf, the other unknown, alternate on this unusual quilt from central New York State. Stylized motifs, not your typical florals. cThis quilt is actually a summer spread with original backing but no batting. Bold solid color cottons fill each of the 49 blocks. Dramatic visual statement as fresh as when made. Minor storage patina.

NINE BLOCK 'SQUARED' FLORAL WREATHS Sandra Mit

  • 83" square
  • 1860s
  • Excellent, crisp
  • $ 3,750.00
  • available

WS 10726

From the estate of renowned Ohio dealer/collector Sandra Mitchell, in her favored color palette. Unusual, perhaps unique squared shape for a floral wreath applique, repeated nine times on a fantastic apricot color tiny print ground, blocks intersected with small red motifs. Superb craftsmanship as in of all Sandra's 'saves.' Cable quilting in the border. One water spot toward the edge reveals the subordinate color of the overprinted 1860s fabric. Pennsylvania origin.

FOLKY FOUR-BLOCK APPLIQUE

  • 76" square
  • 1880s
  • cotton
  • Excellent condition
  • $ 3,500.00
  • available

WS 10581

A unique, bold scale folky composition. A triangular basket or pot is set at each corner, and its long stemmed floral contents extended out toward the quilt's center, making a symmetrical presentation that is all drama first, then one realizes it is flowers! The flowers and stems are rustic abstractions, but the color palette is classic-- red, cheddar and green on a white ground like its more conventional late 19th century applique counterparts. There is some color oxidation in the green, turning to brown in some areas. The quilt however is fresh, unused, professionally laundered having come right out of a storage trunk. The density and pattern of the quilting suggest a Southern origin.

CANDLEWICK SPREAD signed Z. HUSTON

  • 66" x 88"
  • dated 1874
  • cotton
  • Excellent
  • $ 1,275.00
  • available

WS 10523

White embroidery in raised dimension accentuates the aspen(?)leaves on chain stitched slender branches. Signed Z. Huston in lower right corner, dated 1874. Such embroidery candlewicks usually emerge from New England in the earlier 19th century; don't know locale of this lovely example, but still it is an uncommon find. Details are mirror imaged across the entire center, so can be used horizontally or vertically. (Photos done in various contrast photoshop efforts to try to show details.)

THREE FLOWERS IN A POT APPLIQUE, vine border

  • 76 x 80
  • 1880s
  • Excellent
  • $ 2,500.00
  • available

WS 10451

Charming, unusual example of a late 19th century "best" or "show" quilt. Dense, ruched round red flowers emerge in groups of three from a teeny pot. Blocks are set on point all facing the same direction so they add dynamic visual interest. Serpentine vine border barely contains all the visual interest within. Probably Berks County, Pennsylvania

OAK LEAF AND REEL

  • 76" square (fits double bed best)
  • 1880s
  • Crisp untouched condition
  • $ 1,350.00
  • available

WS 10438

A great gender-neutral version of the sought after 19th century "best" or "show" quilt. Red and green on white in a curvalinear geometric rather than the more common florals. Works for antique or modern interiors, a sophisticated classic with staying power, and an easy to use repeat blocks format can be hung squared, or turned as a diamond shape on a substantial, maybe two story, wall.

FOUR TULIPS, chintz border

  • 78 sq, fits double bed best
  • 1880
  • Pristine untouched
  • $ 1,650.00
  • available

WS 10339

Four applique tulips in blocks repeat across quilt surface, made of solid deep red and green cotton. Bordered with richly colored chintz furnishings cotton print. A handsome quality overall, not a fussy girly floral. Would be beautiful in a traditional interior for which a bold more geometric feeling floral would suit.

BRODERIE PERSE DOUBLE IRISH CHAIN QUILT

  • 77" x 88" (fits double or queen size bed)
  • c, 1850
  • cotton and floral chintz
  • Excellent condition,
  • $ 3,500.00
  • available

WS 10183

What an exciting combination of chintz flowers cut out and appliqued in the Broderie Perse technique to fill the diamond-shaped areas created by the pieced chain pattern. In this 150+ years-old historic quilt, the coloration is classic and timeless; rusty reds, natural green, some blue, golden earth tones and ivory. It has never been laundered; the age browning from storage might lighten with a professional cleaning, but many prefer to leave such an early example as found.

STENCILLED QUILT OF FLORAL BLOCKS

  • $ 2,500.00
  • available

WS 10156

The stencilled (painted) blocks alternate and repeat in the center, while a different motif is used for the framework. There are groupings of roses and leaves. Decorative vines alternate with roses that have peach petals and yellow pollen centers. This hard-to-find, very early 19th century American bedcover is unusual because it is QUILTED in addition to beng stencilled; stencilled spreads were typically one layer. Found in New England.
