Cotton yardage of the kind seen in upholstery and home accents now transformed into a whole cloth quilt. A great blue ground floral print, as cheerful and durable as the floral cloths of the same period so collected today.

HAWAIIAN APPLIQUE QUILT

  • 96" x 98"
  • 1950s
  • professionally laundered
  • $ 3,500.00

WS 10676

The distinctive form of applique and quilting for which Hawaii is recognized. The large scale central motif is created by folding the colorful fabric in four and cutting out a design to produce a symmetrical foliate applique. Resembles technique called scherenschnitte (paper cutting) in Pennslvania folk art. The motif is sewn to a solid background, and the quilting done in parallel rows to echo the shapes of the applique. This mid century example is outsized and can fit a king size bed.

HAWAIIAN APPLIQUE peach

  • 82" square
  • 1920-30

WS 10677

A distinctive form of applique quilt for which Hawaii is known. This one is quite a bit older than others that have been found. The peach color cotton is folded in four and cut out in a foliate design that is symmetrical, then sewn to a solid color background. "Echo" quilting follows the cut contours of the applique, another distinction of Hawaiian quilts. There is substantial stitchery on the actual motif as well. In 'as found' condition, can be professionally laundered if buyer prefers.

  • Excellent untouched
  • $ 775.00

WS 10659

The lush imagery of mid-19th century album quilt blocks has been translated with crossstitch into this elegant mid-20th century quilt. A warm mid-green thread is the only color used on the white, so that the complexity of the individual bouquets and urns of flowers can really be studied. On the screen the green looks perhaps too grey and matte, in person it is the second green of leaves emerging in the spring.Superb condition and workwomanship

An uncommon discovery is this 1930s DOGWOOD floral design. Appliqued white dogwood blossoms with brown pods and branches on a bold clear green background Lots of white dogwood blossoms form a diamond trellis central motif, and are scattered at the sides of the quilt. Radiant quilting underscores the vitality of the design. Most likely a published pattern or kit from the colonial revival era when floral designs entered the marketplace for quilters to make, yet this one is hardly ever found!
