A CENTER STAR WITH SATELLITE STARS

  • 3'4 x 3'7
  • 1880s
  • Excellent
  • $ 1,175.00

WS 20224

A single star fills the entire square rug, with smaller stars between the 'arms.' Hooked so it resembles a pieced Star of Bethlehem pattern quilt, but interesting because of the color choice-neutrals with golden tones. Horrid old cracked photo, please forgive, will redo properly after holiday.

HOUSE IN SQUIGGLY SURROUNDINGS

  • 6 1/2' wide x 3' high
  • c. 1900
  • excellent
  • $ 0.00
  • available

WS 20070

An intriguing image of a classic house in a lively surrounding that perhaps was done to convey a windy day, or was an artistic solution to enliven the background of this larger landscape. The folky building looks to be an old stone farmhouse. In person the colors are fresh primaries of red, blue, green with white squiggles (on screen photo may look muddy) Great landscape details within that squiggly ground, see if you can spot them. Was it a portrait of an actual home?! Found in Pennsylvania. Now mounted for wall display. On view June 17-July 17 in HOOKED! at John Sideli Gallery in Wiscasset, Maine.

  • 6 1/2' x 3'
  • late 19th century
  • Excellent, patina'd
  • $ 0.00
  • available

WS 20078

A golden retriever or hound with a pleased expression sits before a gate in a woodland landscape, the whole flanked by folky scrolls. This image is unique to my experience, but it may have been based on a pattern produced by one of the Maine rug design entrepreneurs like Frost or Ross as suggested by the similar framing elements. Has a velvety surface from use and time. Inviting warm tones overall in a lovely ochre, honey color range (image may appear sharper on screen). Outsized width. On view June 17-July 17 in HOOKED! at John Sideli Gallery in Wiscasset, Maine.

Unique to my experience, probably an actual portrait on a New England public building, or maybe an imposing Victorian Gothic ediface that was home to the rug hooker. There is a long staircase in brown at the center front of the imposing tall and towered building. Full blown mostly white roses border the portrait. Where? What? unknown, found in Maine.

One of the premier examples of a famed HUTCHINSON hooked rug, this one has great droll language described the dreams (aned reality!) of a single woman. The Hutchinsons are well described in leading hooked rug books--she a designer, he an entrepreneur, together they produced a number of narrrative rugs decribing relations between men and women; the mustachioed gent is believed to be him, she's the blond in other rugs.
