FOUR- PATCH DIAMONDS, velvet

  • 64" sq
  • Excellent untouched
  • $ 1,575.00
  • available

WS 10798

Rich, lush, wonderful to the touch, and many more adjectives could hardly describe the luxurious 'hand' of the late 19th century silk velvets in this quilt. Solid jewel tones in small pieces about 1" square. Was there a design plan to the placement of the colors? Somewhat but not as an overall concept; instead the small four-patch diamond became a modernist graphic, a happy accident rather than a painterly plan. Red wool twill narrow binding and outermost sides are not visible in photo

'Homespun'check, blue and white stripes, blue chambray and the palest rose check combined in a fresh country quilt. Compatible with Ralph Lauren fabrics as this era quilt has always been a fabric resource for that company. Small scale pieced pattern is framed by blue horizontals and pale verticals, more complex than expected in a country piece. Right out of a storage trubk, never used.

UNUSUAL PRINCESS FEATHER APPLIQUE

  • 68" x 80"
  • 1880s
  • Excellent untouched
  • $ 2,175.00
  • available

WS 10754

I have not seen this pattern before; it is a distinctive variation of the Prince's or Princess Feather with 'straight' feather motifs rather than the more typical curved. The eight appliqued 'feathers' encircle a center dot. Cut out reverse applique details embellish each tip. Distinctive colors too-a cordovan/ deep terra cotta for the applique motifs; classic Pennsylvania cheddar as the background. A symmetrical cordovan border frames the entire quilt (not all shown in the photo).

FOUR POINT STAR or ROCKY ROAD, silk

  • 60" sq
  • late 19th c
  • Excellent, minor breaks
  • $ 1,475.00
  • available

WS 10749

Dynamic configuration incorporates crazy quilt-type piecing in a traditional geometric pattern called variously FOUR POINT, "KITE" or ROCKY ROAD TO KANSAS, among other titles. The larger scale of the nine stars permits the inclusion of many small bits of Victorian silk. Unlike a crazy quilt there is no embroidery to feminize the geometry, but the Victorian quiltmaker could not resist the flourish of a red ruffle. Striking with the multicolor silk bits against black. Excellent condition, a few minor inevitable silk breaks, but nothing to interfere with the enjoyment of the quilt.

STARBURST CRADLE QUILT

  • 32" sq
  • 1860-70
  • Brown cotton cracked, otherwise fabrics intact
  • $ 550.00
  • available

WS 10756

A heart's desire because it miniaturizes an eye- dazzling 19th century pattern that always astonishes when made full size. Brilliant color remains as intense as when it was printed, but....the solid brown cotton corners are beginning to crack. Conserved now with netting to anchor it all in place. Back is a pieced one- patch quilt in period cotton prints.

LOG CABIN COURTHOUSE STEPS black, cream challis

  • 70" x 72" (twin, double)
  • late 19th c
  • Excellent untouched condition
  • $ 1,375.00
  • available

WS 10760

A harlequin concept interpreted in fabric. this Log Cabin is pieced with wool challis prints in strips with a black ground along with jacquard figured beige strips. The small scale of the blocks and careful construction, down to the tiny red and black 'hearth'squares, makes it desirable. So named for the increasingly shorter log strips ascending to the centers. Perfect size to hang on the wall.

CIGAR SILKS PIECED QUILT black and gold

  • 60' sq
  • late 19-early 20c
  • Excellent, some fraying
  • $ 4,500.00
  • available

WS 10740

A design decision to alternate gold cigar ribbons imprinted with brand names with strips of solid black silk has produced a fanstastic graphic design. Prior to the advent of cedar boxes, cigars were sold tied in bunches with ribbons bearing brand names; thousands of brands existed in the 19th-early 20th centuries. Victorian-Edwardian periodicals showed quiltmakers how to reuse the ribbons in decorative household accents, most often pillows or tablemats ranging in size from about 20" to 36". Larger quilts are rare. There is minor fraying in some of the cigar ribbons in one area, they do not detract from the overall drama and utility of this quilt.
